CHILE!

What a Fucking Ride…

4 days of wind, rain, cold and uphill roads, with the General, who gets us through the Andes to cross into Chile over a pass where the temperature is 2 degrees. 4 days in which he never sees the fourth gear and the other gears are pushed to their limit. It rains constantly and headwinds and side winds toss us around. When I was in the pass, I thought I wouldn’t successfully get through it, but as always the beauty of the places gives us the motivation to keep going. The trees seem like giant monsters and the plants have leaves 2 meters high, the mountains are covered in snow on their tops and sides. Beyond the places, also the people we meet are amazing, the customs officer on the Chilean side is out of his mind and in 2 minutes we have all the documents in order to continue.

Now down, down to the enchanted lake to throw ourselves under a very hot shower.

We continue toward the North, toward the Atacama Desert that I’ve never desired as much as I have these last few days. The rain is constant and we stop to rest briefly under a small shelter, shaking like leaves. The small pueblo is called San Pablo. Some Carabineros del Chile come up to us. They are incredulous when

they see the General and ask us a lot of questions about our trips. They offer to take us to a place where we can sleep at night, we follow them but the place is closed. They invite us to go and have dinner with them, we follow them until, trying not to lose them, I have an accident.

I can barely see because of the rain and the muffler hits an asphalt step and boom… the aluminum slip ring breaks completely and the muffler presses against the wheel. The tread of the tire breaks the edge of the muffler but the tire holds. The hard tires are really hard! In the meantime the carabineros have vanished and we’re left under the rain to take everything apart. I make it short: finally the owner of the motel arrives, we take a room and ask if there’s a place to weld the broken piece…

No way, the town is too small and there’s nobody who can weld aluminum and moreover it’s the 31st and we won’t be able to find somebody until the 2nd or 3rd, not even in the city, which is 20 kilometers away. So, we forget about it and go to a small wooden house where they make pizza, convinced that there’s nothing we can do for the next few days. We go in and the owner shouts at us with a huge smile: “Welcome to the pizzeria Da Pablo”. We order some pizza and he asks us if we have a car. We explain the situation to him and he asks us to go and bring the broken piece. We go back in, eat the pizza and then we get into his van with him and, at dinner time on the 31st, Pablo drives us to a friend of his who welds our piece in 20 minutes! We finish assembling everything at midnight and I tighten the last nut of the wheel under an amazing roof of stars while the siren announces the new year. Then we go with the Vespa to Pablo’s to celebrate with his whole family, they kiss and embrace us and happily give us a welcome like we’ve never seen, and eating asado and toasting we celebrate the new year in Chile with a family we’ve never met before and with the miracle of the welding accomplished…

Now toward the North, the Atacama Desert, but first I must clean the carburetor that got jammed up with who knows what!

A flash of the headlight and an embrace from fabulous Chile

PS: Giada, yesterday I thought I saw you on a volcano…
