SABBIA E CACTUS / SAND AND CACTI

Abbandoniamo la strada principale e ci buttiamo in una lunga, infinita strada di terra battuta. Ci perdiamo per qualche ora con un caldo infernale in mezzo a montagne che sembrano immense gobbe di cammelo piene di cactus di tutte le forme. Le guardo e ci gioco in mezzo e …. si, mi sembra proprio di passare da un cammello all’altro, all’infinito, su e giu’ per ore con la polvere rossa e i cactus verdi pieni di spine cosi’ lunghe che si vedono da lontano. Il Generale va alla grande e scala salite che portano a visioni psichedeliche. Eccoli i paesaggi che adoro, stanno arrivando uno dietro l’altro trasformandosi ad ogni curva, e rimango a bocca aperta per lo spettacolo mentre immensi uccelli giocano con il vento e ci sfiorano e il loro urlo riempie le valli che sono verdi smeraldo dopo ore di roccia arida. Verdi per la vita che un piccolo ruscello puo’ donare. E’ impressionante vedere km di vigne in mezzo al deserto e poi ancora su, su fino alla curva piu alta per poi piombare dopo giorni sull’oceano.

A La Serena arriviamo con un giorno di anticipo alla penultima tappa della Dakar. Stanno ancora preparando tutto e noi ci mettiamo a fare foto come se fossimo i primi ….. in fondo e’ vero! Ok, con un giorno di anticipo e arrivando dalla parte opposta ma arrivamo primi. Mentre facciamo gli scemi arrivano all’interno dell’area Dakar i Carabineros del Cile ………. simpaticissimi e restiamo a parlare con loro per un bel po!

Ci chiedono come sono i polizziotti dei vari paesi che abbiamo incontrato e ci dicono che qui in Cile loro sono a completo servizio del cittadino e si fermano sempre a chiachierare con tutti per sapere se e’ tutto ok o se hanno bisogno di qualcosa. Ora mi hanno chiesto anche l’amicizia su fb e vogliono vedere le foto che ci ha fatto Giuliana!

Il Cile e’ proprio un gran bel paese e oltre a una natura fuori di testa, il suo popolo e’ straordinario e per tutto il giorno non facciamo altro che rispondere ai saluti che arrivano da tutte le parti e nei ristoranti o guest house o motel o benzinaio o qualsiasi negozio sono sempre tutti felici di vivere!!

Dopo la tappa della Dakar continuiamo la ruta5 e per tutto il giorno incrociamo i veicoli partecipanti…. il rumore del due tempi del Generale si mischia a quello potente di moto, camion o macchine della Dakar e devo trattenerlo perche’ vorrebbe invertire la rotta e partecipare, ma per questa volta riesco a dissuaderlo.

I posti stanno diventando sempre piu’ belli e bollenti e l’Atacama desert si avvicina, e con lui il momento di scoprire la poesia scritta nel foglio arrotolato che ci e’ stata regalata!

Un Lampeggio e la prossima volta luoghi ancora piu’ magici!!

We abandon the main road and drive along a long, endless dirt road. It’s sizzling hot and for a few hours we’re lost amidst mountains that look like camels’ humps filled with cacti of every shape. I look at them and play in the middle of them… yes, it seems to me like I’m passing from a camel to another, endlessly, up and down for hours with red dust and green cacti with thorns so long as to be visible from afar. The General goes well and climbs hills leading to psychedelic visions. Here they are, the landscapes I adore. They arrive one after another, changing at every bend. I gape at the view while huge birds are playing with the wind and brushing against us, their cries fill the valleys, which are emerald green, after hours of desolate rocks. Green for the life a small river can give. It’s striking to see kilometers of vineyards in the middle of the desert and then again up, up until the highest bend and then, days later, down and plunging into the ocean. We arrive in La Serena a day before the last stage of the Dakar rally. They’re arranging everything and we start taking pictures as if we were the first… actually we are! Ok, a day before and coming from the opposite direction, still we outpaced everyone. While we’re playing the fools, the Carabineros del Chile arrive from the Dakar’s area… they’re really nice and we stop to talk with them quite a bit! They ask us about the policemen of the different towns we passed through and tell us that here they’re at the full service of the citizens and always stop to talk with everybody to know if everything is ok and if they need something. They’ve also asked me to be friends on Facebook and they want to see the photos Giuliana took of us!
Chile is really a great country and, beside its spectacular nature, its people are extraordinary and all day long we do nothing else but reply to all the greetings we receive from every corner. And always all the people love life in the restaurants, guesthouses, motels, gas stations and every kind of shops!!
After the Dakar’s stage we keep driving on Ruta 5 and all day long we meet vehicles participating to the rally… the noise of the General’s 2-strokes engine mixes with the more powerful one of the motorbikes, trucks or cars of the Dakar; and I must hold him back because he’d like to reverse and participate, but this time I can talk him out of it. The places are becoming more and more beautiful and hot and the Atacam Desert is coming closer, and together with it, the desire to read the poem written on a rolled paper we were given!
PS: Thanks Giada for the translations and… I’m almost tempted to cover myself with thorns!
